F. Stuart Foster, PhD
Senior Scientist, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Ontario
Since 1975, Dr. Foster’s contributions to the development of ultrasonic imaging systems have focused on detection and evaluation of prostate, breast and ocular cancers.
A senior scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Foster is also a professor and Canada Research Char, Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. His current research centres on the development of high frequency imaging systems, tissue characterization, high frequency array technology, and intravascular imaging. Dr. Foster’s most recent research is focused on developing new ultrasound tools used in preclinical imaging.
Dr. Foster received his BASc in Engineering Physics from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., followed by MSc and PhD degrees in Medical Biophysics from the University of Toronto. From 1980 to 1990, Dr. Foster was a senior scientist with the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto. He is also a former Terry Fox scientist at the National Cancer Institute of Canada.
Dr. Foster has published numerous papers in the fields of medical and biological ultrasound imaging. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and serves on the editorial boards of Ultrasonic Imaging and Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. In addition to his academic interests, he founded and is currently chief scientific officer of VisualSonics Inc. Dr. Foster has won numerous awards, including, most recently, the Premier's Discovery Award from the province of Ontario.
